2017 Origin Captains Announced

26.05.2017

Melbourne, VICTORIA – The 2017 Big V Origin All Star Series captains have been picked by our respected panel of selectors.

Set to lead their respective sides out onto the floor on 10 June at Casey Indoor Leisure Centre, Lucy Dawson (Knox, Metro Women), Vanessa Power (Mildura, Country Women), Ivan Platenik (McKinnon, Metro Men) and Brent Hobba (Casey, Country Men) have earned the right to captain the sides heading into the second Origin All Stars Series.

Well-respected and talented to boot, the four captains are thrilled to get the opportunity to be part of this year's event.

"It's a really huge honour to be asked to captain a Victorian team,” Dawson said. “I've had a little bit of history growing up trying to represent Victoria and state teams across the years, and I think most people who play basketball in Victoria know it's a significant honour.”

Hobba – in his third season playing Big V with the Cavaliers – was just as thrilled to be selected for captaincy honours.

"I'm just happy to still be considered amongst the players that can be picked for an All Star game so it was an honour to be asked to be captain as well,” Hobba said.

Power felt quite surprised that she was identified and approached to lead the Country Women out onto the floor. "Honestly, I didn't think that I deserved it. I didn't think that I would get it, so just surprised really,” Power said.

Despite having such an illustrious career, Platenik has never actually had the opportunity to captain a team, so this experience will be a different one for him but once he’s honoured to receive.

"I guess I was a bit shocked and overwhelmed and really happy to be able to get that opportunity to captain an All Star team,” Platenik said. “Something I've never had the opportunity to do, captain a team."
