Lady Cats welcome new star player
The Geelong Lady Cats have received a major boost for the 2010 Big V season with home-grown guard Kylie Morrissy committing to the program.
Having completed four seasons of college basketball at Troy University, Morrissy returns home next month to start her professional career with the WNBL’s Dandenong Rangers.
Once the Rangers’ WNBL season is over, Morrissy will slip into a Lady Cats uniform to help lead the way as Geelong aims to make the Big V Championship playoffs.
A member of Rovers in the Basketball Geelong domestic competition, Morrissy averaged a team-high 16.9 ppg and grabbed 4.6 rebounds while starting all 30 games for Troy last season.
It is those numbers and her athletic, determined, all-action style of play that will provide the Lady Cats with plenty of energy and give the fans something to look forward to.
``There is no question Kylie was a key target for us and we’re thrilled that she has committed to play for us,’’ Lady Cats coach Grantley Bernard said.
``She is a dynamic player, good scorer, good rebounder and she wants to win. They are the qualities we’re looking for.
``There are other players we are trying to recruit and we believe Kylie will help that process because they will want to play with her.’’
During her four seasons at Troy, 178cm Morrissy started 106 of 116 games, averaging 13.1 ppg and 4.9 rebounds to make her one of the school’s leading players during that period.
The Lady Cats and the Youth League women’s teams have started pre-season training and will be looking to finalise the rosters in the next few weeks.
